Something snapped today (may be the Manhattan building collapse news on CNBC!). Market only gave up 0.2% from the high of the day and VXX spiked almost 4% from the lows. (at the same value for the market, VXX was down 1.5% today). Note that end of the day buyers are still in control and we should see what is in the cards for tomorrow.
