Who is Lex van Dam?
Lex van Dam is one of Europe’s most highly regarded hedge fund managers and creator of BBC Television’s Million Dollar Traders series. In more than 25 years of professional trading he has seen it all, having held the position of head of proprietary trading at Goldman Sachs and GLG partners, before setting up his own hedge fund, where he currently trades, in London. Lex is arguably the most experienced trader to teach his methods to the public. Our courses apply his proven 5-Step-Trading® process to stocks, currencies, gold or technical trading strategies in each comprehensive series.
What will I learn in the course?
Each course teaches everything you need to know to trade stocks, currencies, gold or technical trading strategies using Lex’s proven 5-Step-Trading® method. The five steps focus on Idea Generation, Fundamental Analysis, Technical Analysis, Psychology and Risk Management, and are applied to each market. As you progress you will gain a better understanding of how professional investors like Lex approach the markets and begin to develop your own style of trading using his framework. By the end of each course you will be fully prepared to invest on a personal basis or embark on a career in the markets.
Who is the course suitable for? Do I need to have any prior knowledge before getting started?
Based on our experience of training traders of all levels using Lex’s 5-Step- Trading® methodology, the course has been designed in such a way that makes it accessible to everyone — from absolute beginners all the way up to experienced professionals.
You do not require a college degree or need to be a math genius to learn how to become a successful investor. In fact, personality traits and your desire to learn are typically the most influential factors in determining your success in the markets. The good news is that these relate to you as an individual regardless of your background or experience, and Lex believes that traders can be ‘made’ as he demonstrated using his methodology on the BBC TV series Million Dollar Traders.
Regardless of your current level of competency, you will be able to pause and rewind any of the videos to listen again to any concepts that you may find challenging. Of course, you also have access to many additional resources included with the course to support your learning with us.
How many videos are included in the course?
There are currently more than 50 videos applying Lex’s methodology to stocks, currencies, commodities, economic data and technical trading strategies. Each video is around 30 minutes in length and feature a number of real-world case studies and tutorials to support the spreadsheet tools that are also included in the course.
How many hours are required to complete the course?
People learn in different ways, and at different speeds. With this in mind, all our courses have been designed to allow you to progress at your own pace and revisit parts as many times as you like. There is no need to watch everything in one go (unless you want to!). Our 5-Step-Trading® courses vary in length between 3–5 hours in total. In order to make full use of the supporting materials including our course workbook, we suggest 5 hours of study as sufficient. Our Million Dollar Traders course is more advanced and requires around 30 hours of study to complete. It may take someone studying a couple of hours per day one month to complete, or one week if they were to commit to it full time. The above guidelines would be sufficient to cover the content only once, and we usually recommend that you re-watch each of the videos at least once to be fully familiar with each of the concepts.
Does Lex’s process focus more on short-term trading or longer-term portfolio management?
Whilst many courses teach only one style of trading, to endure as a successful investor Lex believes that you need to be prepared to adapt to any market environment. For this reason he teaches both shorter-term trading strategies and a portfolio-based approach within the course. The course focuses more time on medium to long-term investing, given that short-term opportunities tend to occur less frequently and aren’t apparent for as long.
In summary the course teaches a combination of these methods, and emphasizes the importance of developing your own approach so that you aren’t dependent on any strategy in isolation.
Is there an exam I can take at the end of the course? Is it optional?
Yes, there are optional exams accompanying each module series within the course that you may wish to take if you want to test your knowledge. They each take around 30 minutes to complete and are complemented by a set of workbooks to support your preparation.
Whilst not everybody may choose to take the online exams, the results are professionally recognized by the IMCA® and count towards Continuing Education (CE) credits in accordance with the Academy’s CE accredited status.
Will the course help me if I want to work in the industry, or become a professional trader?
The method that Lex teaches is based on the techniques that he has employed as a professional trader of more than 20 years working at the likes of Goldman Sachs, and most recently his own hedge fund.
Given his experience and unique position as both an active hedge fund manager and educator, we know what it takes to produce successful traders. This will help you whether you are looking to invest personally or pursue a career in finance.
Upon completion of the course you will have had exposure to the processes that you would employ as a professional trader at either a bank or hedge fund. Given Lex’s reputation as one of Europe’s highly regarded traders in the industry the caliber of our students is recognized by many of the major firms that you may look to apply for positions at.
