Finnair Plc               Investor News               5 June 2025 at 9:00 a.m. EEST

The number of passengers crossed above one million and passenger load factor improved despite flight cancellations related to industrial action

In May, Finnair carried 1,017,200 passengers, which was 3.2% more than in May 2024. Passenger numbers increased significantly in North Atlantic and Asian traffic and saw a slight increase also in European traffic. Passenger numbers remained stable in Domestic traffic and declined n Middle Eastern traffic.

Overall capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASK), increased by 6.6%. Capacity grew significantly in North Atlantic and Asian traffic. In the United States, Seattle returned to the traffic programme for the summer season earlier than in the previous year, and more frequencies were also added to the rest of the country, especially to Dallas. In Asia, the increase in capacity was driven by additional frequencies to Osaka and Nagoya in Japan. In Middle Eastern traffic, ASKs decreased due to the end of cooperation with Qatar Airways on flights between Stockholm, Copenhagen and Doha on 15 January 2025. Also in Domestic traffic, capacity decreased slightly, while remaining stable in European traffic. Including wet lease outs, overall capacity increased by 4.1%.

Finnair's traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), increased by 8.3%. RPKs increased significantly in North Atlantic and Asian traffic and saw a slight increase also in European traffic, while remaining stable in Domestic traffic. In Middle Eastern traffic, RPKs declined.

Passenger load factor (PLF) increased by 1.1% points to 72.4%. PLF increased across traffic areas, except for North Atlantic traffic.

Total cargo tonnes declined by 4.2%, driven by a decline in Middle Eastern and European cargo traffic. Revenue cargo tonne kilometres remained stable.

In May, 80.6% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule compared to 77.2% in the comparison period.

Traffic statistics for June 2025 will be published on Tuesday 8 July 2025.

** Including purchased traffic

  • Change %: Change compared to the corresponding period in the previous year (p = points)
  • Available seat kilometres (ASK): Total number of seats available × great circle distance in kilometres
  • Revenue passenger kilometres (RPK): Number of revenue passengers × great circle distance in kilometres
  • Passenger load factor (PLF): Share of revenue passenger kilometres of available seat kilometres
  • Available tonne kilometres: Number of tonnes of capacity for carriage of passengers, cargo and mail × great circle distance in kilometres
  • Revenue tonne kilometres: Total revenue load consisting of passengers, cargo and mail × great circle distance in kilometres

The reported distance-based traffic figures do not consider longer routings caused by airspace closures but are based on the great-circle distance in accordance with the industry practice.
