How to manage your portfolio from the Holdings tab

The Holdings tab lets you manage your portfolio at the position level. Instead of filling out a transaction form, you add an instrument and enter the quantity you hold. The system creates the underlying transactions automatically. All portfolio metrics are still calculated from transactions, so every position you manage this way is backed by real transactions that you can review at any time.

Adding a holding

To add an instrument to your portfolio without creating a transaction:

  • Click the Add button in the Holdings tab.
  • Select an instrument in the symbol search.

The holding appears in the table with a quantity of 0 and the cursor placed in the quantity field. No transaction is created at this point. Position metrics (P&L, value, average price) show a dash until there is data to calculate them.

If you click away from the quantity field without entering a value, the field shows an +Add button instead.

Note: If you select an instrument that is already in your portfolio, no duplicate is created. You are taken to the existing holding row instead.

Holding states

A holding can be in one of three states:

  • Empty. The instrument is in the table, but there are no transactions and the quantity is 0. Empty holdings do not count toward the transaction limit of your plan.
  • Active. The quantity is above zero and the holding has transactions. This is the standard state.
  • Sold. The holding has transactions, but their sum brings the quantity to zero. Sold holdings are shown with a dash in the quantity field and appear in the table only when the "Show sold" option is enabled.

Note: Empty holdings are temporary. If you leave the page without entering a quantity, an empty holding is removed. If the holding had transactions before, it returns to the sold state.

Setting and updating the quantity

Each holding row has an editable quantity field. To create or update a position:

  • Click the quantity field.
  • Enter the total quantity you hold. This is the final position size, not the size of a single trade.
  • Click outside the field or confirm the input or hit Enter.

The system compares the new value with the current one and creates a transaction for the difference:

  • If the quantity increased, a Buy transaction is created for the difference.
  • If the quantity decreased, a Sell transaction is created for the difference.
  • If the value did not change, nothing happens.

Automatically created transactions use the following parameters:

  • Date. The last available trading date.
  • Price. The closing price for that date.
  • Commission. 0.

Note: Because the transaction uses the latest closing price, portfolio metrics may differ from your broker's numbers. To make them match, open the Transactions tab and adjust the date, price, or commission of the automatically created transaction. It behaves like any transaction created manually.

Note: Automatically created transactions are regular transactions and count toward the transaction limit of your plan. If the limit is reached, the transaction is not created and the quantity does not change.

Closing a position

To close a position, set the quantity to 0. The system creates a Sell transaction for the full position size. The holding moves to the sold state and is visible only with the "Show sold" option enabled. Its transactions are preserved.

To reopen a position in a sold holding, add the instrument again through the Add button. The dash in the quantity field changes to 0, the holding returns to the main table, and you can enter a new quantity.

Viewing transactions under a holding

Click a holding row or the expand icon to see all buy and sell transactions for that instrument directly under the row.

  • The list shows the same information as the Transactions tab, except the symbol.
  • Transactions are sorted by date, newest first.
  • Only buy and sell transactions are shown. Dividends and other transaction types are available in the Transactions tab.
  • This is not a separate set of data. The same transactions appear in the Transactions tab.
