Gold ETF GLD Leads Weekly Inflows; IWM, ETHA Also Strong
The SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) led all ETFs last week, hauling in $2.3 billion as gold prices flirted with record highs near $3,500. Investors sought safety after President Trump’s attempted firing of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook early in the week, making GLD the No. 1 asset gatherer among U.S.-listed ETFs.
The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) was next with $1.5 billion in inflows, a rare bright spot for the small-cap fund, which has struggled for much of the year as smaller stocks lagged their large-cap peers.
Recently, performance has perked up, though, with IWM surging 3.9% on August 22 after Fed Chair Jerome Powell hinted at a possible September rate cut during his Jackson Hole speech.
Another standout was the iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA), which pulled in $1.1 billion. Ether briefly broke into record territory on August 24 for the first time since 2021, though it later slipped as traders locked in profits. Even so, enthusiasm for ETHA remained strong, and new money continued to flow in.
On the fixed income side, the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD) attracted $1.2 billion. Demand for high-grade corporate debt has been robust, with Bloomberg noting that spreads versus Treasuries have narrowed to a 27-year low.
That tightness leaves little margin for error should the economy stumble, but for now, investors appear undeterred.
In total, U.S.-listed ETFs pulled in $34.3 billion during the week ending August 29, lifting year-to-date inflows to $793 billion.
