ETFs Haul in $75.4B, Led by OEF and IEF

Investors poured a massive $75.4 billion into U.S.-listed ETFs in the week ending Friday, September 19, lifting year-to-date inflows to $887.1 billion.

Some of last week’s figures were likely influenced by tax-related heartbeat trades—temporary flows that could reverse in the coming days—but even so, demand was broad and robust.

Equity ETFs Dominate

U.S. equity ETFs captured the lion’s share of inflows with $57.8 billion, while international equity ETFs pulled in $6.7 billion. Commodity ETFs added $3.9 billion, and U.S. fixed income ETFs took in $3.7 billion.

The iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) led all ETFs with $12.3 billion of inflows as the S&P 500 climbed to new record highs, extending its year-to-date gain to about 14%. The Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG) followed with $5.8 billion, while the iShares S&P 100 ETF (OEF) came in third with $3.9 billion.

Assets in OEF have surged from roughly $15 billion at the start of the year to more than $27 billion today. The fund’s narrower large-cap basket has outperformed the broader S&P 500 by around 200 basis points year to date.

On the bond side, the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF) stood out with $2.6 billion of inflows. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note has climbed roughly 10 basis points to 4.14% since the Federal Reserve cut its benchmark federal funds rate by 25 basis points last week—a “sell the news” type of move. Fed funds futures currently imply two more rate cuts are likely before year-end.
