The world's largest exchange of derivatives, the CME Group, has officially announced that its Bitcoin futures contracts will be launched on Monday, December 18, 2017.
On November 20, the company posted on its website that the launch would be made on December 10 and shortly after releasing a new one communicating saying that the date was incorrect. This Friday, December 1, the WEC confirmed that the date now disclosed is official.
"We are pleased to bring Bitcoin futures to the market after working closely with the CFTC and market participants to design a regulated offering that will provide investors with transparency, price discovery and risk transfer capabilities, "said Terry Duffy, president of the CME Group.
CME Group's Bitcoin futures contracts will be available on the CME Globex electronic trading platform. The contracts will be settled in currency, in the case of the dollar, and will be referenced by the CCO CF's Bitcoin Reference Index (BRR). The index, to be published daily, will be based on the Bitcoin price of some of the world's largest brokerage firms that deal in digital assets.
"While we have worked through an extensive and comprehensive process in conjunction with the CFTC, we recognize that Bitcoin is a new and unexplored market that will continue to evolve, requiring continued collaboration from the Commission and our customers in the future," Duffy said.
