India returns to buy more urea as ammonia prices rise in Q4

The nitrogen spread signals higher Q4 prices after ammonia rose to the same level as urea nutrition. US domestic ammonia rose again this week after a 32% increase last week in Tampa. India's Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers company held an early urea tender on September 4, pushing New Orleans and international prices up significantly.

India's urea tender shakes up global nitrogen market

India's tender on September 4 surprised the global urea industry, pushing prices up sharply in the US, Brazil and the Black Sea region. New Orleans (NOLA) urea barges rose to $390-450/ton short versus $335-360 last week, while Brazil urea rose more than $100/ton (ton) from last week, to a price of $450-455/ton -and-transport goods. Black Sea granular urea also rose to $357-394/ton from $320 last week. Other nitrogen markets also strengthened after the urea surge, with end-of-line ammonia rising to $100/ton in the US Corn Belt and Northwest Pacific prices rising $140 to $600/ton for new Q4 offers.

Urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) prices also rose in the western United States. Phosphate was quiet this week, although phosphoric acid and ammonium polyphosphate prices rose in the western United States.
